Snow and Ice

Slip/Trips and falls are a common cause of injury in the workplace.

Schools should have a clear Snow/ice plan that sets out how it will deal with snow and ice.

The plan should include:-

  Monitoring arrangements for weather conditions
Timing of decisions for keeping the school open of closing
Gritting and clearing snow arrangements for example which paths are cleared first
Communication of plan to staff and parents
Site map showing paths ways to be cleared

Staff travelling to school should wear sensible shoes when walking from the car park into the building.

A Snow and Ice RA risk assessment should be completed for snow/ice. Snow and Ice Guidance.

Smaller schools may also ask volunteers (parent helpers) to help clear the snow and this should be included in your risk assessment.

Health and Safety Myth – You are not allowed to clear snow from paths as it is admitting liability if someone falls over

This is a myth and all businesses including schools should take measures to clear pathways.
